A pre-grant opposition can be filed at any point before a patent is granted, and the grounds are narrow and technical. If a published application overlaps with what you are working on, it is worth getting an attorney to read it early.

Publication is what makes an application public. From that date the applicant gets provisional rights, and anyone may file a pre-grant opposition at any time until the patent is granted.
Parts I to III carry patent matter — early publications, granted patents and official notices. Part IV carries design registrations, which are notified in the same journal rather than a separate one.
The journal shows what has been published, not live case status. For status on a specific application number, use the Patent Office e-register or ask us to check it for you.
